GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - On Tuesday 10 August, Thembalethu resident Abongile Zinto (32) made a brief appearance in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court following the fatal shooting of a Bangladeshi man, Habibur Rahmaan, on Friday 6 August in his shop on Sampson Street in Da Gamaskop, Mossel Bay.
The incident took place at about 19:30.
Rahmaan was shot at point-blank range while he was standing behind the counter of his shop. Another Bangladeshi who was sleeping in the living quarters at the back of the shop was shot in his leg and is being treated in a Garden Route hospital.
Police withheld the name of the hospital for security reasons, because the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still being investigated.
According to eyewitnesses, Zinto was caught after a police chase on the N2 near the George Airport shortly after Rahmaan was killed. He was driving a white Volkswagen Golf.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie says a preliminary investigation suggests that Zinto dropped off three other suspects linked to the incident before he was arrested.
It seems Zinto stopped the vehicle on the N2 and the three suspects climbed out and fled into a bushy area.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the three suspects.
The reason behind the fatal shooting is not yet known but police confirmed that nothing was stolen during the incident.
Zinto remains in custody and will appear in court again on 17 August for a formal bail application. He faces a charge of murder.
The getaway vehicle was pulled over by police on the N2 near George after a chase.
