GEORGE NEWS - Two siblings from Thembalethu, Philile and Kanya Cingwane, as well as Azole Ketye, made a brief appearance in the George Magistrate's Court following their arrest on Saturday after they allegedly robbed a liquor store in York Street.
The trio, in their late 20s, will be back in court on 21 August for a formal bail application.
They face charges of armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession of stolen property. It is alleged that the two men entered the shop around 12:15 and threatened the owners with a firearm.
They fled the scene with several bottles of liquor and cash. Sgt Chris Spies, the Southern Cape police spokesperson, said through their swift response, various police units together with a local security company cornered a vehicle believed to be involved in the armed robbery.
"Information took the team to Zone 6, Thembalethu where a yellow Fiat, believed to be the getaway vehicle, was tracked down. A search of the vehicle and the occupants revealed that they had two firearms (an Astra revolver and a 9mm pistol) with six rounds of ammunition, a drone, six cellphones and bank cards in their possession.
"They confiscated the items and arrested the three suspects, two men and one woman."
The firearms and ammunition that police confiscated will be sent for ballistic testing.
