GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Five people, including a baby, were injured in a head on collision about 50km from George on the N9 (Langkloof Road) earlier this morning, Wednesday 23 February.
The accident, in which the three passengers of a VW Golf were critically injured and the driver seriously, occurred near the turn-off to Eseljacht Farm at about 10:45.
According to an eye-witness who spoke to George Herald, the driver of the white Golf lost control of his vehicle and it swerved onto the gravel shoulder of the road.
The driver is believed to have overcorrected and ended up in the oncoming lane hitting a Ford Ranger bakkie. It is believed that the mother and her baby received a lift in the Golf.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Capt Malcolm Pojie confirmed the accident and said a case of driving under the influence of alcohol is being investigated against the driver of the Golf. He was arrested by police on the scene.
The driver of the bakkie sustained minor injuries. The occupants of the Golf were transported to George Provincial Hospital by Metro Ambulance Services.
Complaints were received by dissatisfied motorists as traffic was allegedly backed up for some kilometres while the scene was being cleared.
According to one of the motorists they were forced to wait for hours while a stop go system could easily have been implemented much earlier.
