GEORGE NEWS - A total of 15 people were arrested during unrelated incidents relating to the possession of firearms, possession of dangerous weapons and possession of drugs, in the George area over the weekend.
On Friday 26 February, patrolling police officers spotted a suspicious-looking man in King Street, Parkdene.
"When the man noticed police approaching him, he threw items over the fence and fled," said Southern Cape police spokesperson, Sgt Chris Spies. His freedom was however short-lived when a makeshift firearm was found in his possession.
"A further search of the area resulted in the discovery of two sharp objects. The 19-year old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition.
On the same evening, stop and search operations were held in Parkdene, Borcherds and Maraiskamp. Here police arrested eight suspects aged between 19 and 28 for possession of drugs. Small amounts of tik, Mandrax and two parcels of dagga were confiscated. Meanwhile, the Pacaltsdorp police arrested five suspects aged between 15 and 29 after drugs were found in their possession.
"The members confiscated small quantities of Mandrax and tik during these arrests," Spies said. In an effort to eradicate liquor abuse in communities, Thembalethu police conducted a sting operation at a liquor outlet in Zone 4 on Saturday 27 February.
According to Spies, a 30-year old suspect was arrested on a charge of selling liquor without a licence. Police officers confiscated a substantial amount of liquor on the premises.
All the suspects were due to appear in court this week. By the time of going to print the details around their court appearances could not be confirmed.
