GEORGE NEWS - A suspect was arrested early on Monday morning, 27 January, after being caught in the act of setting a traffic light box alight and removing copper wires.
George Municipality says that three of the boxes were completely destroyed.
Due to the damage and theft of the electrical cables, the traffic lights in Nelson Mandela Boulevard, between Lawaaikamp (Pienaar Street and Nelson Mandela Boulevard intersection) and Conville Police Station (Pienaar Street and Nelson Mandela Boulevard), are currently out of order.
The municipality says the suspect was arrested at 05:00 and charged.
Repairs and traffic arrangements
- The traffic lights will remain off until repairs are completed, which are expected to take one or two days.
- The George Municipality Civils Directorate will assist by installing necessary signage where required.
- The Traffic Department will deploy point duty officers during peak hours, lunch breaks, early mornings, and end-of-day rush to manage traffic and ensure safety.
The municipality requests all road users to exercise patience and caution while driving through the affected area. “Your cooperation is appreciated as we work to restore normal traffic flow.”
