GEORGE NEWS - Seven suspects, all from the Ryger Park and Rosedale area, were arrested on Tuesday 23 April after a man (25) and a woman (24) from Pacaltsdorp, sustained serious injuries when an unknown liquid was thrown at them.
The victims were leaving a night club in Beach Road at about 01:00 on Sunday morning, 21 April, when the incident occurred.
According to a family member who requested to remain anonymous, the victims were about to get into their car to go home when they were accosted by a group of men.
The men had a container in their possession and threw the contents, believed to be some sort of acid, at victims.
The male victim sustained serious injuries to his eyes and was admitted to hospital. He was discharged on Tuesday 30 April and is recovering at home. However, according to the family member there is still a long road to full recovery of his eyes.
The female victim also sustained injuries, but fortunately most of the liquid thrown at her landed on her clothes and skin.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, she later consulted a doctor for medical care and a report to this effect was compiled. "The contents of this report forms part of the ongoing police investigation."
The suspects, between the ages of 17 and 28, made off with the victims' iPhones and a bank card.
They made their first court appearance, in camera, last Friday on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances. Their identities have not yet been released due to the minor in the group.
They will make their next court appearance later this month for their formal bail application.
Praise to the police
The family member later contacted George Herald to express her gratitude towards the Pacaltsdorp police. In her letter she stated how impressed she was with the quick action that was taken in order to have the suspects arrested and taken to court.
"After two family members were seriously assaulted, robbed and a type of acid was thrown in their faces on Saturday, seven suspects were arrested by Tuesday and appeared in court by Friday. All in one week. Many thanks to the detective and her colleagues for their quick action," the family member said.
