GEORGE NEWS - The formal bail application of Johannes 'Jakes' Jacobs (53) and Gert 'Johnny' Bezuidenhout (37), who are accused of the murder of controversial businessman and alleged Cape Town underworld figure Mark Lifman (57), was postponed in the George Magistrate's Court this morning, Thursday 12 December.
The bail application for both accused will continue on 16 and 17 January.
The men have been moved to a different correctional facility about four or five hours away from George. It has been challenging for their legal representative to consult with his clients.
During today's proceedings, he requested that the court grant him the opportunity to consult with his clients before they are "swooped off to the correctional facility again".
Their legal representative said it was essential that he has a proper consultation with his clients before their bail application.
Among the people in the gallery were Jerome 'Donkie' Booysen, alleged leader of the Sexy Boys gang in Cape Town and André Naudé, a business partner of Lifman. Booysen told the media outside court that they were there to support Lifman. Both these men were accused alongside Lifman of the 2017 murder of the 'Steroid King' Brian Wainstein at his home in Constantia.
Lifman, Booysen and Naudé were due to appear in court for the murder trial on the Monday after Lifman was shot.
Lifman was shot dead in a meticulously planned assassination at 11:38 on Sunday 3 November in the parking area at the Garden Route Mall. The suspects were apprehended at 16:00 the same afternoon near Uniondale.
According to reliable sources, both suspects work in the security industry as bodyguards. Both are skilled marksmen who participate in shooting competitions nationwide.
Jacobs is a former police officer who was part of the police's specialist task team. He was dismissed from the police in 1998/1999.
George Herald has been granted permission to take photos and videos during today and tomorrow's court proceedings.
André Naudé (left), Donkie Booysen, and Booysen's son Joel with two more supporters of Lifman, were among the people in the gallery during today's court proceedings.
