GEORGE NEWS - Police have opened an inquest docket following the death of a 62-year-old man who was found unresponsive in a holding cell at Thembalethu police station on Wednesday morning, 4 February.

According to information received, the man was arrested in Caledon on a charge of theft involving an amount of approximately R90 000 the day before.

He was reportedly transported to George by police and detained at Thembalethu police station, where he was later found deceased.

Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies confirmed that an inquest docket was opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. He said the matter has been reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), which is expected to handle further investigations.

At this stage, police have not confirmed the cause of death, nor whether any foul play is suspected. 

Further details regarding the incident are expected to be provided by IPID.
