GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - On Tuesday 10 December, senior inspector Salomé Bruyns of the Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) made a heart-wrenching discovery in New Dawn Park, Pacaltsdorp.
A young boy approached her, pleading for help for a dog that was being grossly neglected by its owner.
As Bruyns arrived at the scene, she was met with a distressing sight. A German shepherd, once a proud and healthy animal, had been reduced to a mere skeleton. Chained next to the house, the dog had been left to suffer, day in and day out, without food.
The owner, who allegedly acquired the dog just a few months ago when it was in excellent condition, now faces criminal charges. The dog was allegedly given to him as 'free to a good home'.
The dog, now in the care of the SPCA, is a testament to the resilience of animals. Despite being subjected to unimaginable cruelty, the German shepherd remains a gentle soul, sitting on command and giving paw for food.
Inspector Gerda Groenewald was overcome with emotion as she offered the dog food, only to have it give a paw in gratitude. It's a harrowing reminder of the unforgivable reality of animal neglect.
Donations are welcome to support the SPCA in its efforts to care for this dog and others like it. Contact them either on 044 878 1990 or email them at branchg@grspca.co.za
