BUSINESS NEWS - The nail and beauty industry is one that easily lends itself to women entrepreneurs, but even though barriers to entry are often assumed to be low, starting out as a woman in business can be daunting, regardless of the industry chosen. It is also an industry that many women seek to build their careers in as employees, as it can offer both flexibility and good earning potential, and is often already a passion for many women.
Deciding to start your own business is a big commitment, and it can feel overwhelming if you don't know where to begin.
"Choosing the nail and beauty industry is a good start, as many women already know a little bit about it, even if only from being a customer themselves," says Melany Viljoen, President and Founder of Tammy Taylor Nails South Africa.
"Most of us have visited a nail and beauty salon at least once in our lives, and many women who have a passion for the industry do so on a regular basis. They already know exactly what they would want to experience as a client – the trick is to translate this into offering other clients this as a business owner."
Tammy Taylor Nails South Africa is a successful franchising operation in the nail and beauty industry in South Africa precisely because they help women salon owners understand exactly how to take what they want as clients and transform it into offering exceptional products and service to their own clients.
"Of course, this is not the only ingredient required, but it goes a long way," says Melany. "We also believe in empowering women through training – both technical and business training – and through offering them an unmatched support structure as they navigate the business world through franchising."
Empowering women through business ownership is not the only avenue that Tammy Taylor Nails South Africa provides for women to make their mark in the nail and beauty industry, however. "We also offer a fantastic opportunity to become employed in the salon of your dreams as a nail technician or beauty therapist," explains Melany. "Our salons are beautiful spaces where everybody feels special, even the employees. We believe in making every visit memorable, and being trained to do exactly that is a special skill that will serve you going forward, no matter your chosen career."
The Tammy Taylor Nail Academy is the source of this training, and every student is shown the ropes by master educators trained by Melany herself. "In order to certify as a Tammy Taylor Nail Technician, our students need to build a perfect acrylic French fade in under an hour, while explaining Tammy's 12-steps," says Melany. "Once a nail technician is trained, they are placed in our recruitment programme, which helps them find employment within our extensive salon network."
This commitment to job creation is one of the hallmarks of Tammy Taylor Nails South Africa, and what sets it apart from many others, not only in the nail and beauty industry, but in the franchise space in general.
"Women are the backbone of our society, and it is important for my team and I at Tammy Taylor Nails South Africa, to support women in any way we can," says Melany. "We know that by providing various avenues for employment, either through business ownership or as an employee, we are offering women the unique opportunity to not only help build a strong brand that they can be proud to be associated with, but to build their own futures. Every woman should be able to decide what legacy they want to leave behind one day, and we want to help make that decision a little easier."
