Yesterday Economic Opportunities MEC Alan Winde visited a farm in Paarl where a horse recently died from the disease.
The farm, and surrounding area, have been placed under quarantine.
About 70 horses in the region have been tested and have been found to be free of the virus.
State vet Gary Buhrmann says the European Union (EU) has placed a further two-year ban on horse exports after the last AHS outbreak in 2014, in Porterville.
“We were actually on the verge of asking the EU to consider having the ban lifted and now we have another outbreak, so they will automatically impose two years.
When this case is contained and we’re happy that it’s over, then from that last date they’ll say another two years. We’re looking at June 2018.”
African Horse Sickness is not contagious and can only be transmitted by midges.
