GEORGE NEWS - Keystone Medical Group's state-of-the-art Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Unit is on its way to George and will provide female residents with out-of-hospital mammography and sonar services.
Radiologist Dr Nikoli van Zyl says female patients can use the opportunity to come for their annual screening mammograms and breast ultrasounds in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month in October.
"We have planned the return of the unit to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month to allow our patients to come for their annual screening as part of our continuous fight against breast cancer. During our previous visit to the Garden Route, we received an overwhelming response from residents," Van Zyl says.
The mobile breast cancer screening unit is the only one of its kind in South Africa, aiming to make mammographic screening accessible to all women, both private and medical aid patients.
"An annual mammogram is recommended for all women over the age of 40.
If your mother or grandmother had breast cancer, a mammogram should be done ten years before her age of diagnosis. A breast ultrasound can be done at any age. It is important to perform regular self-examination and if you feel any abnormality, you are welcome to consult us," says Van Zyl.
They are also looking forward to the launch of the national movement, Screen Her Save Her, in October.
To make an appointment for a mammogram at the mobile breast cancer screening unit, which will be at Eden Meander Lifestyle Centre in George from 4 to 29 October, please book online at https://calendly.com/ks-med, or call 087 055 0587 (Option 8).
