GARDEN ROUTE BUSINESS NEWS - If you live on the Garden Route and are looking for an opportunity to begin your journey of understanding wine, the Wine & Whatever Experience in proud partnership with Vodacom is the perfect place to start.
Estate wines, food stations and demonstrations by top chefs and wine experts will be the order of the day at the Wine & Whatever experience to be held at Fancourt's conference venue on 8 and 9 August.
Food Stations
There will be a choice of four food stations to tantalise the taste buds. Firstly, an Outeniqua Harvest Board made up of locally produced charcuterie, pickles and cheese as well as Parma ham on grissini, salami, pickled brinjal, pickled mushrooms, bocconcinni and cherry tomato skewer with basil pesto and focaccia bread. Then a Sushi Station offering a vegetarian option, crab and salmon complemented by pickled ginger, soy sauce and wasabi.
For the carnivores, a Beef Burger Station sporting a prime beef burger with a selection of toppings and choice of mushroom or cheese sauce. If that's not enough, a live Pasta Station with a vintage pasta machine will be on show using fettucine and rigatoni, Alfredo and bolognaise sauce topped with Parmesan shavings.
Demonstrations on Friday
There will be three demonstrations on Friday during which well-known chefs from Fancourt and wine experts will team up to explore combining food and wine - a match made in heaven: at midday chef Vito Fanizza and wine expert Anton Visser (Douglas Green), at 14:00 chef Matteo Battaini, and at 16:00 chef Ewald Schulenberg and Rosco Lewis (Boland Cellar) will wrap up proceedings.
Estate Wines
Grapes from different regions are grown on different soils with different climates. Different cultivars thrive in different conditions, and even then, they produce wines with different characteristics. Understanding the history and characteristics of the various cultivars and why they produce wines of different colours, flavours, alcohol and tannin levels on different soils and under different climatic conditions, enables connoisseur wine lovers to experience the joy of an almost limitless feast for the senses. A feast that, sadly, most never experience.
The red wine cultivars will include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. The white wine cultivars will include: Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier. There will also be rosé, blends and fortified wines to keep out the cold.
