BUSINESS NEWS - Healthcare workers experience challenges on a daily basis, yet despite the mental and physical impact of these, individuals working in healthcare are often expected to persevere - and many even take pride in their ability to endure intense and stressful situations over extended periods of time.
The difference between a good healthcare professional and a great one is rarely skill alone. It comes down to their ability to think critically, act instinctively and display empathy and compassion, shift after shift.
The mental health of a professional can have a significant effect on all of these attributes, directly impeding their ability to provide high-quality, safe patient care.
Regardless of the importance of caring for our healthcare professionals' mental and emotional health, stigma surrounding mental health issues persists. Many healthcare professionals choose to endure in silence rather than call attention to any mental health challenges they are experiencing. As the saying goes, you cannot pour from an empty cup and, sadly, a significant number of professionals try to do just that.
Organisations need to be more mindful than ever of the psychological stress their employees may be experiencing. Now is the time to start addressing this stress and develop strategies to mitigate it.
In support of healthcare professionals with mental health struggles and to create a workplace culture that openly addresses mental health wellness, Netcare Akeso George participated in the "Crazy Socks 4 Docs" initiative on 7 June.
All clinic staff, as well as internal and external healthcare professionals forming part of the Netcare Akeso team, received a pair of funky socks as a reminder to practise mindfulness and self-care in protection of their own mental well-being. The team wore their colourful socks with confidence and the management team is hopeful that through this fun team-building event, staff will feel more motivated and able to recognise when to hit 'pause' to reset, refresh, and refocus, and seek support when needed.
