GEORGE NEWS - In 2007 Elsie Harmse took a leap of faith when "she risked it all" to start Africa Skills Private College in George.
Today Africa Skills Private College is part of the UXI Artisan Development Group with a national footprint of more than 21 campuses, including the François Ferreira Academy and the Michelangelo Hair Academy in George.
Elsie's vision was to create opportunities for local school leavers to obtain a qualification and work experience that would enable them to step into employment or entrepreneurship in George, South Africa, and indeed, the world.
There is a huge demand in South Africa and the rest of the world for skilled artisans: electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters, chefs, hairdressers and more. At Africa Skills Private College, we follow a work-integrated learning model.
Our learners complete their theoretical and practical training in our lecture rooms and workshops on campus and are then placed with businesses in their trade where they gain on-the-job practical experience.
Once they've completed all these components of their training, they do a trade test and, if successful, obtain an internationally recognised "red seal" qualification.
We also offer learnerships and short courses and most of our courses are now available online on our eCampus platform.
Elsie and her team would like to personally invite you to come and experience our campuses in George on our Open Day on Saturday 29 October at the various campuses to explore the opportunities that a career as an artisan has to offer.
