BUSINESS NEWS - Every pet owner wants to see their beloved companion running, playing and enjoying life without pain.

Unfortunately, for some dogs, conditions such as hip dysplasia can make even the simplest movements difficult.

Sophia, a three-year-old spaniel, was recently brought to Vitalvet Animal Medical Centre after her owners had noticed severe pain and weakness in her hind leg.

Having previously undergone a successful total hip replacement, they were understandably concerned that her remaining hip might also require surgery.

Hip dysplasia is a developmental condition in which the hip joint does not form correctly. Instead of the ball and socket fitting together smoothly, the abnormal shape causes excessive wear on the joint.

Over time, this often leads to osteoarthritis, chronic pain and reduced mobility, which can significantly affect a dog’s quality of life.

Following a thorough examination by Dr Helen Pringle, diagnostic X-rays confirmed that Sophia’s remaining hip was also severely affected and would need to be replaced.

A total hip replacement includes removing the damaged ball-and-socket joint and replacing it with specially designed prosthetic components. This advanced procedure restores normal joint function, relieves pain and allows many dogs to return to an active, comfortable lifestyle.

To perform this highly specialised surgery, Vitalvet Animal Medical Centre welcomed Dr Ross Elliot, a specialist veterinary surgeon from Gauteng with extensive experience in total hip replacement procedures.

After weeks of careful planning and preparation, the surgery was successfully performed.

Sophia is now recovering well and is already taking the first steps on her journey back to a pain-free life.

With appropriate rehabilitation and follow-up care, she is expected to regain excellent mobility in the months ahead.
