GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality is taking a bold step into the future with the official launch of its Electrical Smart Metering project. Far more than a simple equipment swap, this initiative serves as a foundational “engine room” for the city’s strategic objective to become a Smarter City, as prioritised in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP).
By replacing its ageing, manual technology with world-class Kamstrup OMNIA e-meters, George is building a digital foundation for modern, data-driven service delivery.
This infrastructure ensures high-level data integrity that uses cellular communication to record consumption at 30-minute intervals.
This view of demand trends allows the municipality to manage supply costs more effectively and prepare the grid for future energy technologies.
Benefits to the consumer
This shift to smart technology translates into immediate billing accuracy. By moving away from estimates to actual, real-time data, the municipality fosters greater transparency and reduces billing disputes, providing confidence to consumers.
The project further empowers consumers through the George Home App which will provide them with a real-time look at their electricity consumption history on a smartphone.
This visibility allows households to identify high-consumption appliances, adjust their habits to manage monthly expenses, realise potential savings, and receive faster notifications regarding supply interruptions or technical faults.

Installation and security
The roll-out is being conducted at no cost to residents and only where replacements have been earmarked. During installation, a qualified technician will spend about one hour at the property, resulting in only a brief power interruption.
Technicians will document the process with “before and after” photos and will be available to assist residents with on-site app registration.
Security is a top priority. All authorised teams carry official identification badges and a signed authorisation letter from the director of the Electrical Services Department.
Residents are reminded that installers will never request payment; any such request should be reported to the municipality immediately.
