Garden Route water supply reaches 42 weeks as dams remain strong

GEORGE NEWS - Water resources in the George area remain in a strong position this week, with the Garden Route Dam holding at 100% and the estimated available water supply increasing to 42 weeks.

According to the latest weekly water statistics for 29 September, the Garden Route Dam remains unchanged from the previous week at full capacity. The dam recorded 0.8 mm of rainfall over the past week.

The estimated water supply has increased from 41 weeks last week to 42 weeks, based on water that can be pumped and treated. Water below the intake or treatment level is not included in this calculation.

Despite the healthy dam level, daily water demand remains slightly above the municipality's target. Current demand is 36.5 million litres per day (MLD), compared with the target of 36 MLD.

This means residents are still encouraged to use water responsibly, particularly as maintaining demand below the target helps protect available supplies over the longer term.

Haarlem Dam rises above 100%

Haarlem Dam has also recorded an increase over the past week, rising from 101.19% to 101.79%.

The dam received 20 mm of rainfall this week, contributing to the increase.

While dam levels are encouraging, the municipality's water-demand management measures remain in place and residents are reminded that responsible water use remains important even when storage levels are high.

Small changes can make a difference

With the Garden Route Dam full, it can be tempting to assume that water restrictions and conservation measures are no longer necessary. However, daily demand remains slightly above the municipal target.

Residents can help keep consumption under control by making a few simple changes:

Check for leaks: A dripping tap or leaking toilet can waste a surprising amount of water over time. Check meters and plumbing regularly.
Water gardens at the right time: Water early in the morning or later in the afternoon to reduce evaporation.
Keep showers short: Cutting just a few minutes from a daily shower can save litres of water.
Reuse suitable household water: Water from activities such as rinsing vegetables can be used for gardens where appropriate.
Don't let the tap run unnecessarily: Turn it off while brushing teeth, shaving or washing dishes.
Report water leaks: Prompt reporting can prevent treated drinking water from being lost unnecessarily.
