Dave Richardson from Heather Park writes:
I was dropping my wife off in the car park adjacent to Dr Eyal's rooms in Doneraile Street when I was approached by a young guy, 10 or 12 years old, looking for a handout.
In my hand I had a Kindle Reader, which he snatched, and he took off running. I tried to catch him, but 82 years vs. 12 years doesn't work!
When we got into the doctor's rooms, the receptionist, Elsabe, called the SAPS to report it, giving my details, and they asked if I could come round to make a statement, which I agreed to do after dropping my wife off at home.
Before I could leave home again, Elsabe from the doctor's rooms called to say a guy named Philip from Greystorm Tactical had called her to say he had found the youngster at the taxi rank, who ran off but dropped the Kindle, and escaped.
Obviously elated, I went back to Elsabe, who gave me the Kindle and also the contact details of Philip from Greystorm, whom I contacted, and we met in the car park so I could thank him personally.
I am writing this letter in the hope that you can publish this tale, and compliment not only Philip, but other bystanders who tried to help, and to reaffirm our gratitude and happiness that we decided to retire to George some eight years ago.
This is not an isolated incident, as soon after we arrived, in 2017, I had a laptop stolen, but a quick-thinking policeman arrested a person in Conville and retrieved the item within 24 hours!
This is a compliment to George, its citizens, the police and security companies, and we should be grateful our town is in good hands.
This incident may also reinforce the need to be aware and vigilant when holding or carrying small items, like phones, etc, which can be easily snatched from your hand.
