Ian Clarke from George writes:
The never-ending saga of the N2 'upgrade', initially referred to as such by Sanral, is a disgrace. To say nothing of what the cost must be. And that is not to mention the unbelievable mess further on between Kaaimans and Wilderness, and now more so towards Kleinkrantz.
One thing is clear, Sanral is exceptionally good at digging up a road, but has proven to be exceptionally poor at completing any reconstruction.
The most basic elements for the manage-ment of any construction project is the cor-rect sequencing and progressive completion of sections, not progressive demolition without completion of anything. Surely it is time for the George Municipality to step in and take over those sections within the municipal area at least?
Randall Cable, Sanral's provincial head for the Western Cape, responds:
We are not sure of the context or the details of the letter of complaint. It may well relate to the inconvenience caused by the construction works on the N2 between Kraaibosch and De Vleie to motorists.
There may also be a lack of understanding in the sequencing of the construction activities, which is understandable, given the complex and technical nature of the works. We do, however, welcome constructive comment with good intentions.
The construction works to improve the N2 through this tough mountainous terrain was always going to be a challenge. However, creating a safe working space to complete the roadworks and safely accommodating motorists is being well balanced by a team of professionals.
These professionals adhere to very strict requirements and specifications by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral), which not only maintains the highest quality standards, but puts the interest and safety of road users first.
There are currently two construction projects on the N2 between Kraaibosch and De Vleie that are on schedule to be completed at their anticipated completion dates.
The N2 improvements address a dual function of mobility and accessibility that the strategic N2 corridor serves through this area. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to motorists during this time, but also trust that there is an appreciation for these important works on this very important and strategic N2 route.
