GEORGE NEWS - The University of the Third Age again has an array of interesting talks and discussions on the agenda for May.
On Wednesday 8 May in Armchair Travel, Dennis and Martha Woolard will talk about 'Historical trails of the Eastern United States of America'.
This talk focuses on the history, the important personalities, the people of the region and places of interest of the American War of Independence and the American Civil War. Starting in Philadelphia they will proceed through Washington, Virginia, Appalachia, Gettysburg and end at Mount Vernon on the Potomac river, the home of George and Martha Washington.
Dennis was district head of Psychological Services at the Gauteng Education Department. Martha retired as financial controller and treasurer of Ford Motor Company South Africa.
This promises to be a fascinating talk that starts at 10:30.
On Friday 17 May, Wilhelm van der Vyver will give a talk on 'Russian Sacred Music'. He will introduce his audience to the different worlds of Russian Sacred Music and some of the composers of this genre and tempt us with snippets of this music.
Wilhelm was born in Stellenbosch and is a practising attorney in George. His interests include film as an art form, classical music, travel, literature and art.
We have not had this type of talk before so try not to miss it. Tea is at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
On Monday 27 May, Case Rijsdijk will lead another interesting discussion on International Affairs.
On 29 May, apart from being Voting Day, Gavin O’Connell-Jones will present 'Eskom - shining star to pariah – a coal specialist’s perspective'.
This talk will deal with a brief overview of Eskom and its operations, the coal industry, the first signs of trouble brewing at Eskom and finally, the state of play and what the future holds.
Gavin holds a BSc in Geology, a graduate diploma in Mining Engineering and is a registered natural scientist and has spent 43 years in the coal mining industry.
Tea is at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
