GEORGE NEWS - What family photograph, heirloom, document or everyday object in your home could tell a story about where you come from?

The George Museum is inviting members of the public to bring those stories to life during a special Heritage Month “Show & Tell” event on Saturday 19 September. It forms part of celebrating 50 years of the George Museum in its current home.

The event, which runs from 10:00 to 13:00 at the museum, will also mark the official launch of the Ambassadors of the George Museum initiative.

The theme, “Our heritage. Our stories. Our future”, recognises that heritage is not only found in museums or historic buildings, but also in the objects, memories and stories passed down through families and communities.

Members of the public are encouraged to bring an object, photograph, document, family heirloom, keepsake, original artwork or other item with historical or personal significance and share the story behind it.

The item does not have to be connected to George.

Items with a connection to George or the surrounding region can tell stories about people, families, places, events, traditions, occupations, communities and migration.

Three minutes to tell a story

There are 20 presentation slots available for participants who would like to take part in the Show & Tell.

Selected participants will have three minutes to explain:

What: What is the item?

The story: Where did it come from and why is it meaningful?

The connection: What does it tell us about the person, family, community or broader heritage? If it is connected to George, how?

Those who would rather not speak in front of an audience can still participate by displaying their item and story as part of a special community exhibition.

Organisers are looking for contributions that reflect history, culture, community or heritage, tell stories about people and places, represent the diversity of local communities, or have educational or heritage value.

The story matters more than the object. It is not about age or monetary value. A small, ordinary or unexpected item may hold a story that helps everyone understand and preserve local heritage.

Registration closes on Monday

People wishing to participate must register by Monday 14 September. Selected participants will be notified by Wednesday 16 September.
