GEORGE NEWS - The past weekend saw 200 learners from 10 local schools put on their Shakespeare hats at the George Arts Theatre, for the Shakespeare Schools Festival South Africa (SSFSA).
"What an incredible experience!" said coordinator Heather Stead. "What an exciting mix of cultures, languages and skills on our stage. We had wonderful support from the families and friends in the audience. Thank you to all the schools involved who put in so much work."
Participating schools include York High, Glenwood House and Preparatory, Thembalethu High and Primary, Jonga High, Tyholorha Primary, Gracehill College, New Dawn Park Primary and Heidedal Primary.

What is SSFSA?
"The concept of SSF, which is run in five cities in South Africa, is not an emphasis on Shakespeare, but on the journey of putting on a play, which will be unique for every school," said Stead.
"Each teacher and student will be starting from different places and face different obstacles along the way. We focus on the themes that Shakespeare opens up for discussion in his plays. The plays can be in any language and set in any place. SSFSA is non-competitive. Knowing that there is an audience, clapping and whooping, is an electric and affirming experience for a young person."
