GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - Seussical the Musical hits the stage at the George Arts Theatre this week, for a fortnight of colour, craft and imagination. Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza featuring plenty of characters from the well-loved Dr Seuss books.
Show times this week are from 22 to 25 February (18:30), with a matinee on Saturday 25 February at 14:00. The second show week continues from Wednesday 1 March (nightly at 18:30) until Saturday 4 March (14:00).
"Tony winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have lovingly brought to life all our favourite Dr Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little girl with a big imagination - Jojo," said arts director Quintin van Biljon, arts director at the Dotsure George Arts Theatre and the founder and owner of The White Peacock Theatre studio in George.
"The colourful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Who."
Who's who?
The Cat in the Hat is the narrator who tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a child who thinks too many "thinks".
Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.
Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.
Tickets cost R120 (adults), R100 (members) and R80 (children) and are available on Computicket or at the theatre box office. For more information, contact the Arts Theatre on 044 873 3938.
