GEORGE NEWS - The George Music Society is very excited and proud to present the gala concert of the Young Musicians Competition on Friday 9 June at 18:00 at the George Arts Theatre.
This concert is one of the highlights in the music calendar of the Garden Route.
Tickets cost R130 for adults and R50 for learners and are available at the theatre during office hours, or online, or at the concert.
More than 80 items from all over the Garden Route were presented at the auditions in May.
The three adjudicators namely Olga Bosman Schoeman, Olive Sandilands and Anina Wasserman, had a very difficult task to make a selection for the gala event as the standard was exceptionally high.
In the end, thirty items including saxophone, guitar, clarinet, other brass instruments and singing performances were chosen to perform at the gala, where the final winners will be announced and receive their trophies and prize money.
New trophies were donated this year including the Tip Top Jewellers Trophy for best woodwind and brass instruments, the Kerwin Albertus Trophy for best blues performance, the Ludolph Pedro Piano Trophy for best romantic interpretation and the George Music Society Trophy for best instrumental ensemble.
These will now be included in the twenty prizes available.
This wonderful opportunity for learners to perform in front of an appreciative audience was started 38 years ago by George Music Society members and many a professional musician from George has participated in it when they were at school.
Some of them, such as the Bushakevitz siblings, are making big names for themselves in Europe and many have returned to teach and share their experience and talents with the next generation of upcoming musicians.
This event is an opportunity for young musicians to challenge themselves and to meet musicians from other music schools to form one big music community. It also serves as an experience to improve self-confidence for later performances and exams and is definitely not just about winning prizes!
The George Music Society wishes to thank all the children, teachers and parents for their support for this deserving project and invites the wonderful people of the Garden Route to come and support these hardworking, talented learners at the spectacular gala evening.
