GEORGE NEWS - Decor lovers from far and wide are drawn to 21 on Montagu Gallery and Design Studio for the unusual variety of exceptional art objects, furniture, ceramics and paintings. Renowned for the quality and originality of the pieces on display, owner Sally Boon sources her eastern collections of vases, ginger jars, silk jackets, traditional figures, stone crafted statues, Temple Lions and Buddhas, on her frequent buying trips abroad.
The striking, hand crafted Chinese cabi-nets have a raw feel and their appeal lies in the natural look. Many of the objets d’art at the gallery have been carefully selected to bring warmth and add character to a home in a subtle way.
If you want to make a statement anywhere in your home, the gallery offers a wide range of eclectic pieces to choose from. "Our art work is all original and focuses on local artists, representative of a cross section of South African painters, sculptors, ceramic and glass artists. Kervin Cupido is representative of modern ethnic art and has rural charm, and his wildlife oil paintings are colourful and show spontaneous movement as seen in his painting Buffalo.
"The still life paintings by renowned Wilma du Toit are simplistic yet realism is beautifully captured on canvas. Hugo Maritz’ works have a superbly natural raw feel to them. Sedgefield sculptor Bridget Randall’s delicate works include, amongst others, some stunning wildlife pieces and there is a demand for the quirky ceramics of Rika Crots," says Sally.
Sally’s rare knack for combining objects and furniture to form a unified whole, has been garnered over many years. She undertakes interior decorating for private homes on request. "Rare objects can be sourced from anywhere in the world, creating a timeless, elegant and classical look." The welcoming feeling at the gallery is enhanced by a patio overlooking a well manicured garden where tea and delicacies are served.
