GEORGE NEWS - The Wilderness Chess Club is hosting a Freestyle Chess960 tournament at Fairy Knowe Hotel on Saturday 11 October.

This is a newer, less predictable way of playing chess; the starting position changes and players have to think for themselves from the very first move.

Chess960 starts with the chess pieces arranged in one of 960 random back-rank positions. Opening memorisation takes a back seat, while adaptability, calculation and imagination come first. This one-day tournament is designed to give players a fresh competitive challenge.

Casual players, seasoned competitors, juniors, adults, locals and visitors are all welcome. With a broad mix of categories and recognition across the field, everyone has a reason to make their move.

The club is working towards a R10 000 prize pool and is inviting local businesses and residents to help them get there. 

Cash contributions, vouchers, products, experiences or other prizes are welcome. 

Sponsors will be acknowledged through the tournament website, social media promotion, printed material and branding at the event.
