Educare centre fixed up after storm damage

GEORGE NEWS - The Nompumelelo Educare Centre in Thembalethu received a lovely make-over in response to a call for help after it had suffered rain and wind damage during the storms in May.

George Herald published a plea on behalf of the principal, Andile Maduna, last month. The preschool lacked the funds to do any repairs. Parts of the building were unusable and it was affecting the care of 29 of the 51 registered learners.

Maduna was overjoyed when help arrived from two sources: Oscar Meyer, who sponsored repairs to the storeroom and kitchen, and a Fancourt resident, Justin Williamson, who mustered up the support of a few friends. This group replaced the entire roof of one part of the building, putting in new insulated ceilings and new lights.

They also repainted the classrooms and the one bathroom and repaired a leaking roof on the main building with new sheets. The group also bought the children a few rugby, soccer and tennis balls, as well as a few push bikes and educational posters.

Said Williamson: "It was really lovely being able to participate in something like this. Andile is just an amazing lady who was wonderful to work with.

"Thank you to George Herald for highlighting the centre's needs. There are many folks who are always looking to assist where they can, but are not sure where help is needed."

Maduna said she is forever grateful for everyone's assistance and kindness. "They did a great job. Our children can play and learn again in a place that is safe, dry and colourful. They have given us hope again."
