GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Work on the R227.2 million upgrade of the N9/N12 between George and Oudtshoorn is progressing, with construction expected to be completed by June 2028.
The project, which started in October 2025, aims to improve road safety, traffic flow and driving conditions along one of the region’s important transport routes.
Approximately 5km of the N9/N12 is being upgraded and strengthened, while a further 2km of Waboomskraal Road, which intersects with the main route, is undergoing repairs and resurfacing.
According to the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure, construction is currently focused on earthworks, rock excavation, drainage improvements and the development of permanent road infrastructure.
The improvements are expected to make travelling between George and Oudtshoorn safer and more efficient for motorists, commuters and businesses that rely on the route.
What improvements can motorists expect?
Several changes are being made to improve road safety and accommodate traffic more effectively.
Existing traffic lanes are being widened from 3.3m to 3.7m, while road shoulders will increase from 1.5m to 2m and receive a surfaced finish.
The project also includes improvements to the road's alignment, the construction of an approximately 800m-long retaining wall, upgraded drainage systems and the installation of new guardrails, road signs and fencing.
Work on Waboomskraal Road includes repairing damaged sections, maintaining drainage infrastructure and reconstructing its intersection with the N9/N12.
These improvements are intended to provide better visibility, safer road edges and more reliable driving conditions, particularly along sections where the road's existing layout presents challenges.
Construction of permanent works at 22 km.
Protected plant species are also being temporarily relocated to accommodate construction activities.
Local workers and businesses benefit
Apart from improving the road network, the project has created employment and business opportunities for communities in the area.
Since construction began a year ago, 102 work opportunities have been created towards a project target of 240.
Local workers have completed 9 424 person-days of labour, with the project aiming to reach 34 000 by completion.
A total of R8.5 million has also been spent on goods and services procured from targeted enterprises, against an overall target of R32.5 million.
Six contracts have been awarded to local enterprises, with a target of 21, while two emerging contractors have secured contracts towards a target of six.

Following the inspection, the department confirmed that the anticipated completion date remains June 2028, provided construction continues as planned.
The department will continue monitoring construction quality, road safety and progress against project milestones.
