GEORGE NEWS - Over the weekend of 1 and 2 May, George Bowling Club held its open singles championships for both the ladies and men.
There were 18 ladies and 27 men that entered. The group stages were played on Sunday, with the winners of the various sections moving on to the playoffs on the Monday.
The finals were held on Monday after-noon in beautiful weather, attended by many members.
In the men's semi-finals, the "young guns" Donald Olivier and Eben Mare were up against the experienced district bowler Zakes Salemane and the ex-Protea bowler Billy Radloff respectively.
Both Donald and Eben are still novice bowlers (less than three years' experience), but both came out tops.
Thus Donald, who recently won the club's novice singles, was up against Eben, whom he beat in the novice final.
Eben turned the tables this time, coming out top and taking the Open Men's Singles title.
In the ladies section, the experienced Petro Breedt and Maryke Rabie battled it out to see who would play the final against last year's winner Johlene Bronkhorst, who had a "bye" into the final after beating Martha Pringle in the quarters.
Petro beat Maryke in a good game and then beat Johlene in the final to take the Ladies Open Singles title. Both Johlene and Petro are Eden district players.
