The tournament launch and draw was held on 18 April at the Thembalethu Library. 24 teams from George participated, and their fans were not disappointed.
In a turn of events, tournament favourites Young Blues FC, Stimela Stars FC, Hea-ven Stars FC and Diego Masters FC were all knocked out of the competition in the quarterfinals by teams considered as underdogs.
For the first time, this year women’s teams also competed against each other for a top spot.
The ladies’ final saw Pacaltsdorp team Pacs United WFC play Dangerous Darkies WFC with the latter team winning the game 1-0.
The first men’s semi-final match was between Y2K FC and Young Masters FC, with the latter winning the game 1-0.
The second semi-final match saw Dangerous Darkies FC pitted against Black Cats FC, who proved too strong and in extra time won the game 2-1.
In the men’s final match, played at Thembalethu stadium, the Black Cats FC, who are in the SAB Regional league, faced off against the Domestic league’s Young Masters FC, and entertained the crowd with a very high standard of football.
At the end of the day, Young Masters FC won the game 3-2 and showed why they are regarded as a top contender for the 2010/2011 Domestic league honours. Their performance showed that they can compete against teams playing in the SAB regional League.
Geolfa thanks the George community for their continued support of local football and hope that next year’s tournament, strengthened by financial sponsors from business and local government, will be bigger and better.
