CRICKET NEWS - The Garden Route Badgers started their Cricket SA One-day Cup campaign on a high last weekend with a seven-wicket victory against the Northern Cape Heat in Oudtshoorn.
The mammoth 275/3 run chase was also a new SWD record for the highest successful run chase in a 50-over list A match.
The Northern Cape Heat, who won the toss, opted to bat first on a very hot day in Oudtshoorn.
The Heat was in trouble at 53/3, but the captain, Ronan Herrmann (128 from 115 balls; 4x6, 8x4), played a true captain's knock to enable them to post a competitive 270/7 in their allotted 50 overs.
Zack Momberg (3/56) and Banele Cele (2/38) were the stand-out bowlers for the Badgers.
A record opening stand of 275 between Ruan Terblanche - who scored his maiden list A century - 133* from 134 balls; 3x6, 10x4 - and Yaseen Valli (75) paved the way for a Badgers victory. The home side surpassed the target, 275/3, with 13 balls to spare.
The Badgers' next match was against Mpumalanga Rhinos in White River on Wednesday 25 February, and they will go up against Eastern Storm at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Saturday 28 February.
