GARDEN ROUTE CRICKET NEWS - All club cricket in the SWD has been cancelled. The first matches were scheduled for Saturday 6 March, but the Covid-19-pandemic has had the last say.
According to SWD Cricket Chief Executive Officer, Albertus Kennedy, the majority of the clubs voted in favour of the cancellation of the leagues planned for the 2020/21 season. "A transparent process was followed and it was evident that the risks and limited capacities to ensure the safety of players were too big," he said.
The members council of SWD Cricket voted for the cancellation by means of an ordinary round robin resolution.
The planned league competition for the 2020/21 season was tabled at a cricket committee meeting of SWD Cricket on 3 February, where clubs were invited to participate in a survey about their ability to comply with Covid-19 protocols.
They were asked about their clubs' capacity to properly train and/or prepare for the planned competition, to guarantee that protocols will be adhered to during training and play, to ensure that travelling to and from venues would conform with protocols and about the availability of facilities for scheduling fixtures during the month of March.
The clubs were also asked whether they would be able to accept responsibility and liability for and to ensure the safety of all participants.
