NATIONAL NEWS - Member of the Provincial Parliament and PA councillor Brendon Adams says his arrest in George this morning, Friday 27 March, is politically motivated.
He appeared in the Thembalethu Magistrate’s Court on charges related to the alleged contravention of a protection order.
The police confirmed that Adams was taken into custody in connection with a case of contempt of court and crimen injuria. The matter was postponed to 1 April, when Adams is expected to return to court.
“This is all politics. I was in Parliament on Tuesday when Simmers [Minister Tertuis Simmers] told me I should answer my phone because ‘Pappa’ [the police] was going to call me. And at that very moment I received a call from the police.
“Last year Simmers obtained a temporary interdict against me, for which I must still appear in Bellville. This is because I said on Facebook, among other things, that he is a ‘coconut’. But, that was all last year,” said Adams.
“I don’t know why they think I violated the interdict. All my statements about him on social media and in groups were last year, so it doesn’t make sense. After the interdict, I behaved myself - apart from winning the three by-elections in George. That probably made Simmers a bit unhappy.
Adams said he was in Oudtshoorn on Wednesday for the by-elections to help the PA, and on Thursday evening (last night) I went to find out what ‘Pappa’ wanted. “But ‘Pappa’ himself was just as confused,” said Adams. “They can’t explain to me how I supposedly violated the interdict.
“They then asked me to return to the station this morning so that I could go to court to appear on a charge of contravening an interdict. They then held me in a holding cell. I was there from 07:00 this morning, and at 09:00 I appeared in court.”
Adams is being represented by Winston Jansen Attorneys. The state prosecutor is Astrid Michaels.
