SAC claim to have improved upon the standard models 147kW/470Nm with its ‘Texas Walker’ conversion kit. The upgrades can be implemented in several stages, meaning that depending on which parts of the conversion one fits and which map of the performance chip you select.
The additional power comes from a Dastek Unichip Plug and Play Performance chip. SAC claim that this chip has been comprehensively tested on the Ford TDCi engine and is optimised for our unique South African driving conditions. Performance gains with Unichip installed means a claimed power and torque hike of up to 15%.
The next stage in the upgrade process adds extra cooling through the fitment of a custom made Power Cooler. This intercooler is close to a double volume cooler allowing for vastly reduced charge air temperature, this allows the engine to perform better and reduces overall thermal temperature.
With the Power Cooler fitted, the team at SAC can also add a Power Switch option, and this way the owner can dial into the maximum power available, or choose a map that favours more technical off-road type driving, or even opt for more frugal driving.
The Unichip system with the Power Switch option offers five different driving maps. The first setting is a security setting that renders the engine powerless and the vehicle unable to be driven. The next setting puts the vehicle back into stock standard mode; the third setting offers a more relaxed power delivery for better fuel consumption, especially when doing city type driving.
Then you get a setting that is ideal for off-road work and towing that sees the engine's peak power delivered at lower engine speeds. And the fifth and last setting is the actual power option that unleashes the most possible power with this particular set-up.
There is also a new 76mm performance exhaust system for the Ranger. This system has been developed specifically for the Ranger, ensures improved back pressure and a clear exhaust path.
We are a bit dissapointed that there isn't an optional roundhouse kick mode with all of those maps available but who knows, maybe there's room for a Karate move or two.
