Incorporating the latest adaption of Lexus’ Spindle Grille with a profile similar to that of the LS, the ES is claimed to “feature an engaging design, athletic performance and renowned Lexus refinement”, while being based on parent company Toyota’s TNGA platform that underpins the C-HR, Prius, Camry and Avalon, as well the forthcoming new RAV4 and Auris / Corolla.
Reportedly set to replace the GS as mid-point between the IS and LS, the ES could continue with the current model’s four-cylinder 2.5-litre petrol engine and 3.5-litre V6, although it could alternatively be equipped with a detuned version of the LS’ 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6.
As indicated by the blue badge at the base of the rear door, the ES will offer a hybrid option likely to be the same 2.5-litre unit doing duty in Camry, yet it could also be made available with a less powerful version of the LS500h’s Multi-Stage Hybrid System consisting of a 3.5-litre V6 engine combined with an electric motor, and a unique gearbox that blends a four-speed automatic with a CVT for an effective 10-speed self-shifter.
Presently, the ES’s drivetrain options and interior appointments are purely speculative with complete details only expected to be revealed next week. Lexus South Africa has meanwhile confirmed the ES for local introduction, but without announcing an exact date.
