In a statement, the AA cites the weakening of the Rand relative to the US Dollar as the biggest factor, despite international oil prices having remained stable since the start of June. It expects the price of petrol to go up by 32 cents a litre, diesel by 30 cents and illuminating paraffin by 22 cents.
“Almost all of the increase is due to Rand weakness and the picture would have looked very much worse if international oil prices had not come down over the past two weeks,” the association said.
“With the volatility of oil markets over the last six weeks, an increase in the oil price cannot be ruled out in the short to medium term, and we once again advise all motorists to avoid unnecessary journeys, make use of carpooling, and practice economical driving techniques”.
Near the end of business on Friday (15 June), the Rand was trading at R13.46 to the Dollar with Brent Crude Oil at $75.51 a barrel.
