The new MX-5 will come with come with Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology which includes SKYACTIV-G petrol engines and the first rear-wheel-drive version of the SKYACTIV-Chassis. The benefit of this technology is weight-savings and efficiency optimisation. For instance, the new model will weigh 100kg less than the outgoing model and the same as the first generation. It also has the lowest-ever centre of gravity for an MX-5.

Specifics regarding engines and transmissions have not been confirmed, however, it’s said there’ll be a six-speed manual and an automatic transmission. In terms of engines, expect a few options with the range-topper likely gunning for the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ with a longitudinally-mounted engine producing somewhere in the region of 147kW.

Mazda has mentioned that the new vehicle will be a step up in terms of the quality of the interior as well as the addition of more features, such as a touchscreen display.

In true Mazda tradition, the fourth MX-5 will come with fabric roof as well as a wind control function, to make driving with the top down a more pleasurable experience.
