As previously reported, the Velar derives its name from the original Range Rover prototype shown back in 1969, and will be offered in a choice of four trim levels (base, S, SE and HSE), based on three variants; standard, the sporty R-Dynamic and limited run First Edition.
Available only for a year, the First Edition comes equipped with every otherwise optional extra, and will be a order only model with the top-spec HSE trim serving as a base. As well as allowing buyers to choose from 17 wheel designs, 13 exterior colours and 15 material finishes, the Velar also gets Land Rover's new Matrix LED headlamps, all-new dual ten-inch InControl Touch Pro infotainment system and four-corner air suspension.
Underneath the bonnet, the Velar will come powered by two petrol and diesel engines, all linked to a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic gearbox and Intelligent four-wheel drive.
One of the first models to make use of Jaguar Land Rover's newest Ingenium engine, the base 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol develops 184 kW and 365 Nm of torque, with a claimed fuel consumption of 7.6-litres/100 km and 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds.
Unlike the more powerful 221 kW four-pot offered in Europe, the only other petrol engine destined for South Africa is the familiar all-aluminium 3.0-litre supercharged V6, which makes 280 kW and 450 Nm, and allows the Velar to reach 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 5.7 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 250 km/h.
Known internally as the D180, the base oil burner also displaces 2.0-litres, but churns out 132 kW and 430 Nm, enough for the Velar to reach 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds while consuming diesel at a rate of 5.4-litres/100 km.
Completing the four-banger diesel range, the new D240 adds a second turbocharger for a total output of 177 kW and 500 Nm of torque, meaning a combined fuel consumption rating of 5.8-litres/100 km and 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds.
At the sharp end, the 3.0-litre V6 produces 221 kW and a mammoth 700 Nm of torque, which Land Rover claims is enough for the Velar to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds, reach a limited top speed of 240 km/h and drink diesel at a claimed 7.6-litres/100 km.
The Velar will officially go on sale from the fourth quarter of this year.
