Named after the 1969 prototype that previewed the original Range Rover released one year later, the Velar, its name being derived from the Latin word velaris meaning veil or cover, will slot in between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport in the brand's growing line-up, and rival the likes of the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3 / X4 and Porsche Macan.
No technical details have been yet been revealed although UK media reports suggest the Velar, known internally as Project L560, will adopt the same aluminium IQ-platform as the Jaguar F-Pace and use the same range of Ingenium petrol and turbodiesel engines with a V8 and plug-in hybrid possible.
Pricing in the UK is rumoured to start at around £45 000 (R738 044) with Land Rover confirming the release of more details on March first.
