GEORGE NEWS - The whale carcass, believed to be a baleen species, which washed up at the Gwaiing Beach river mouth earlier this week, has since been carried back out to sea by the high tide, bringing relief to local residents and visitors.
The carcass drew attention due to its size and its position at the inaccessible river mouth area.
At the time, experts noted that whale strandings are often the result of multiple contributing factors, including illness, navigational error, rough sea conditions, or age-related decline, rather than a single cause.
The geography of river mouths and sandbanks can also make it difficult for large marine animals to return to deeper water.
In a statement of appreciation issued by the Gwaing Action Group (GAG), chairperson Blanche Benjamin confirmed that natural forces ultimately resolved the situation.
“We are relieved that nature eventually took its course and the whale carcass was carried back into the deep sea. This has brought much relief to the surrounding community and visitors to the area,” Benjamin said.
The group also expressed gratitude to all stakeholders who responded during the incident.
“The Gwaing Action Group (GAG) would like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to each and every individual, organisation, department, and stakeholder whom we contacted regarding the whale carcass… We truly value the concern, support, advice, and professional views shared with us during this matter,” the statement read.
