GEORGE NEWS - The George Council, at a special council meeting this morning, 22 May, approved the easing of the water restrictions from Level 2D to Level 2B for the total municipal area, including Uniondale and Haarlem. Emergency water tariffs have also been lifted, dating back to 12 May.
Cllr Donovan Gultig, MMC for Civil Engineering Services, said the easing of the restrictions brings much-needed relief to businesses and households under pressure, however the improvement of the dam level does not mean security.
“The Garden Route Dam remains below the 90% low-risk threshold and the forecast still warns of below-average rainfall.”
Gultig said easing restrictions is “a measured and responsible step”.
“Water security remains one of the most important issues facing us as a community, affecting every household and every business.
"The municipality will continue to monitor the dam levels closely and will remain ready to act if conditions worsen and will communicate openly and honestly with our residents.”
He called on residents for their continued cooperation. “Responsible water use remains essential. Every drop saved today protects every family tomorrow. Responsible water use is still being promoted to protect our future supply. The municipality must plan for tomorrow’s risk.”
The Garden Route Dam level was measured at about 88% on Tuesday 19 May and the Haarlem Dam is full.
Level 2B water restrictions are as follows:
- From 1 September to 30 April: 18:00 to 20:00
- From 1 May to 31 August: 17:00 to 19:00
- For retirement villages and facilities: 16:00 to 18:00 throughout the year
- Even numbered households: Mondays and Thursdays
- Uneven numbered households: Tuesdays and Fridays
