GEORGE NEWS - The George Municipality Community Development office recently appointed and trained five peer educators to help people address challenges related to HIV and Aids.
The peer educator programme builds on a programme initiated by the George Municipality in conjunction with health partners last year, that includes education and awareness projects at schools, clinics and communities. The aim is to address challenges such as teenage pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse.
"In view of the positive outcomes of the previous project, a need for its continuance was identified and five peer educators were appointed. In addition to creating jobs for the five young people, they will be empowered to render a service to people living with Aids and TB," said HIV and Aids coordinator Leachia Lee.
These programmes support the social and economic needs of those infected and affected by HIV and Aids and are aimed at preventing teenage pregnancies, instilling moral values in the community and the learners, encouraging a healthy and safe lifestyle and reducing the number of new infections, especially among young people in the 15 to 24 age group.
It also aims to reduce the impact of HIV and Aids on individuals, families, communities and society, and encourages people to take proactive steps towards living a healthy lifestyle, irrespective of their HIV or TB status. For information contact the Community Development office on 044 802 2000.
