GEORGE NEWS - On the eve of International No Plastic Day, 3 July, the youth of Thembalethu removed over 300 bags of plastic waste from the banks of the Schaapkop River, one of the most polluted waterways in George.
The Schaapkop, which originates near Kazi Street in Thembalethu, flows beneath the N2 past Borcherds, Lawaaikamp and Pacaltsdorp into the sea.
The clean-up was initiated by ward councillor Bonisile Hani and organised by the Garden Route Dam Action Group (Gardag).
The bags, weighing over a ton, were removed by Henque Waste, one of the leading waste recyclers in the Garden Route.
"We are happy to assist community clean-ups with our 'weigh and pay' system for recyclable waste," says Douw Bezuidenhout of Henque Waste.
"It makes 'cents' to recycle and we plan to work closely with waste recyclers to extract value from waste," says Hani.
George Municipality is currently upgrading the nearby Schaapkop pump station and stabilising the river bank as part of a R1,197-billion infrastructural grant from National Treasury.
