Taxi chaos in NM Boulevard

GEORGE NEWS & VIDEOS - Two taxi drivers are facing charges of attempted murder after two unrelated incidents in Nelson Mandela Boulevard on Tuesday 18 April.

Both drivers allegedly refused to stop, and sped off when traffic officers attempted to pull them over. This did not only endanger the lives of their passengers, but also pedestrians and other motorists.

A video of one of the incidents was distributed widely on social media and can also be viewed below.

In the videos it can be seen how a taxi carrying passengers speeds down Nelson Mandela Boulevard in the direction of Thembalethu while being chased by local traffic officers.

Throughout the video, one can hear the passengers screaming, crying and even praying for their lives, as at one stage the taxi driver goes over the island in the middle of the road, straight into oncoming traffic near DF Scott.

Traffic officers eventually caught up with the driver. He was arrested and his taxi impounded.

Details about the second incident are unclear, but information gathered by George Herald indicates that the taxi driver also refused to stop when local traffic officers tried to pull him over in Nelson Mandela Boulevard.

Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies confirmed the incidents and said both drivers remain in custody until their expected court appearances in George today, Thursday 20 April. More charges could be added as the investigation continues.
