GEORGE NEWS - The George Municipality will host a two-day training programme on Wednesday and Thursday, 27 -28 May, focusing on sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) and improved stormwater management in urban and peri-urban areas.
It will be held at the municipality’s offices in Market Street. The training aims to support the adoption of nature-based and hybrid stormwater solutions that promote water-sensitive urban design and strengthen urban ecosystems.
Municipal officials, engineers, town planners, landscape architects, environmental practitioners and interested residents are invited to attend.
The programme will also introduce participants to the municipality’s draft Guideline on Stormwater Management in Urban and Peri-urban Areas.
Course conveners include hydrologist Phillip Hull of Pegasys Global Consulting, Associate Professor Neil Armitage from the University of Cape Town and Geoff Tooley, president of the Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa.
The first day of the training, facilitated by Armitage, will focus on the foundations and practical application of SuDS. Topics include flood risk, water quality, limitations of conventional stormwater systems and sustainable drainage options.
Participants will also take part in practical design workshops covering sub-catchment delineation, flow paths, preliminary control measures and storm impact assessments.
The second day will focus on applying the George stormwater guideline document and strengthening institutional implementation. Hull will present an overview of the guideline and its practical application in planning, design and approval processes.
The afternoon session, reserved for municipal officials and facilitated by Tooley, will address updated stormwater bylaws, policy frameworks, enforcement and compliance challenges.
The training is for free. Interested parties may RSVP by 22 May via the registration form.
