SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - It was a sombre return to Hoër Landbou-skool Oakdale in Riversdale on Tuesday 22 July, as the school reopened for the third term - everyone in mourning.
The Oakdale community is grieving the tragic loss of Grade 10 learner Ruben Bezuidenhout (16) from George, who died in a vehicle accident outside Bloemfontein on Saturday 19 July.
In an interview with George Herald, Riaan, Ruben's father, shared the last in-person conversation he had had with his son.
This was when he had dropped Ruben off at the George Airport for his holiday in Bloemfontein. "We laughed so hard that tears were streaming down our faces - we had to pull over on the side of the road.
"That's how we laughed, you know, at the simplest of jokes. And then, as we said goodbye, I asked him, 'Son, before you go, is your heart right with the Lord?' He said yes, and then asked me, 'Is your heart right with the Lord, Dad?'
"He gave his life to the Lord two years ago, sitting on the couch next to me. He was a child of God. Ruben had a strong personality and was a natural leader. He touched so many lives and had the most beautiful smile," an emotional Riaan said.
He said the family is overwhelmed and deeply grateful for all the support and messages of encouragement.
The family moved from the Free State to George 11 years ago and lives in Kraaibosch. Both Riaan's sons are former Outeniqua Primary learners. Wian (14) is now in Grade Nine, also at Oakdale.
School principal Willem du Buisson said the news of Ruben's sudden passing has deeply affected the school community.
"Ruben was a very involved learner, one of the school's top 20 academic achievers, and an enthusiastic sportsman with a particular love of rugby," he told Suid-Kaap Forum, George Herald's sister publication. "We are devastated by this heartbreaking incident and extend our deepest condolences to his parents, family and friends. We wish them strength and comfort during this incredibly difficult time.
"Ruben will be remembered for his zest for life, his dedication and his active participation in school life. His absence will be deeply felt."
Hundreds of messages of sympathy and support have been pouring in from across the country. Among them is a touching tribute from Dené du Plooy:
"Ag nee, Ruben. I will always remember your friendly face and the warm way you welcomed us during Oakdale's open day in 2024. Denru hung on to your every word. You had such beautiful manners and always greeted so politely.
"You were a wonderful boy and made a lasting impression on us. Our hearts are very sore, and we are thinking of your family during this time. You played a big part in the love and positive image we have of Oakdale. You will be sorely missed."
The two white-haired brothers many assumed to be twins, Ruben and Wian.
Another heartfelt message came from Danie van Rensburg: "Ruben/Klippies, I met you through Johan near the tennis courts, and your kindness will always stay with me. Rest in peace. Strength to Riaan and Benita, and also to the others involved in the accident."
Hessequa's executive mayor, Grant Riddles, also extended his condolences on Monday evening. "It is with deep sadness that we learnt of the passing of Ruben Bezuidenhout. As mayor, and on behalf of the Hessequa Municipality and the entire community, I wish to express our sincere condolences to his parents, Riaan and Benita, his brother, Wian, and the rest of the family. May you find comfort in one another and in knowing you are not alone in your grief - God is with you."
Ruben will be laid to rest at the Dutch Reformed Church Bergsig at 10:00 tomorrow, 25 July.
He leaves behind his parents and brother.
Accident
The accident occured on a farm in Tierpoort, about 35km from Bloemfontein, at about 16:30 on Saturday. The white Isuzu bakkie in which Ruben and his friend were travelling reportedly rolled several times after the driver had lost control.
Ruben sustained multiple injuries and was declared dead on the scene. His friend was taken to hospital with injuries.
