GEORGE NEWS - The George branch of the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) paediatric ward has been quite busy since the arrival of Mieka the kitten and Pick n Pay, a puppy.
Both were admitted on 28 January after they were run over by cars on the same day.
According to Dr Shirley Smith, the veterinarian who operated on the two animals, Pick n Pay were brought in by a passer-by from Thembalethu who picked her up in the street. "His femur was badly broken in two places and one of his paws had cuts and bruises," she said.
However, two surgeries later he has two pins in his leg and has been vaccinated and dewormed.
"He is recovering slowly. We are still trying to save his leg and will hopefully not have to resort to amputation," Smith said.
Little Mieka had a fairly simple fracture for which they inserted a pin. She was discharged after five days.
Mieka could go home five days after surgery.
Both were treated at no cost to the owners, as they couldn't afford to pay.
"At the PDSA we feel it's not the animals' fault they are run over. We try to fix them before considering euthanasia. We don't euthanise any animals brought to us for treatment due to lack of funds by owners."
Anyone who is willing to contribute to the veterinary bills of these two survivors, are welcome to contact the PDSA.
