GEORGE NEWS - The Ebrahim Patel Community Cup (EPCC) is more than just a rugby tournament - it’s a platform for community upliftment.
In the lead-up to the inaugural Easter tournament, headline sponsor New Hope Training Organization and partner sponsor Sebeletsa Group donated playing kits to three South Western District (SWD) Rugby Union rugby clubs.
Following the tournament’s official launch on 20 March at Fancourt, the EPCC Legacy Project rolled out its first major initiative on Human Rights Day, 21 March.
New Hope head Hilton Moitse joined the EPCC team in Oudtshoorn to hand over kits to the Oudtshoorn Collegians Rugby Club.
George team benefits
In George, Crusaders RFC received a new kit from Sebeletsa Group director William Muller at the Parkdene sportsground. The event was attended by George Deputy Mayor Browen Johnson and the MMC for Social Development and Sport, Melvin Roelfse.
Crusaders chairperson Dion Sigamoney thanked Sebeletsa Group for this generous donation. “Our club was formed in 2003 and has been a dominant force in SWD club rugby, winning the Super League twice in the past five years,” he said.
The Crusaders will debut their new kit in a Wild Card match against George RFC at Outeniqua Park on 21 April, with the winner securing a place in next year’s EPCC.
“It’s a privilege to play in this tournament,” said Sigamoney. “It’s great for George, both for rugby and the local economy.”
'Honoured to sponsor'
Sebeletsa Group’s William Muller highlighted their commitment to supporting underprivileged communities. “We’re honoured to sponsor the Crusaders. Our company believes in building communities, and where we can make a difference, we do.”
Johnson praised the EPCC’s impact. “The response to this tournament has been incredible. We’re thrilled to have a major club rugby competition returning to George and look forward to its annual growth,” he said.
MMC Melvin Roelfse echoed the sentiment: “The EPCC Legacy Project is making a real difference in our communities. We encourage everyone to come out and support the tournament this Easter weekend.”
The EPCC Easter Tournament takes place at Outeniqua Park from 17 to 21 April, featuring top teams from across the Western and Eastern Cape.
