GEORGE NEWS - Outeniqua Primary School is among other Western Cape schools that made it to the third round of the Nestlé Nespray South African Mathematics challenge and are in the running to be crowned mathematics champions in this year's challenge.
The competition aims to empower learners to be independent, creative and critical thinkers, able to interpret and analyse situations in and out of the classroom.
The four learners out of 431 from Outeniqua that made it to the third round, are Mikela van der Spuy, Daniel du Plessis, Taelin Reuter and Johan Meintjies. The four, together with learners from schools like the Deutsche Internationale Schule Kapstadt in Oudtshoorn and Curro Primary in Mossel Bay, took part in the final exam on 12 September.
Outeniqua said they are still waiting for the results of the learners.
The top 20 performers from this round will go to a "smart camp" to participate in various maths challenges in October.
For years now the challenge around mathematics has been a problem, with South Africa being ranked as one of the poorest performing countries, and it has prevented schools from competing globally. This is why Nestlé Nespray has partnered with the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) to lend a helping hand in finding ways that can help improve the mathematics standard for primary school children in the country.
